🚨 CONTROVERSIAL 🚨
Let’s get a bit controversial today.
When patch cards were first introduced, they were all the rage. And to be fair, they were fun to collect – at least for a while.
But over the years, at least for me, patch cards have started to feel… flat.
Back When Patches Actually Meant Something
Back in the day, patches were often match-used pieces of clothing, worn by the player during an actual game.
That was special.
In 2021, I bought a Benteke Crystal Palace Immaculate card, and the patch literally had grass stains on it.
How cool is that!?
That’s history. That’s a real connection to the game.
What Happened?
Fast forward to today, and most patch cards are simply:
- random pieces of fabric
- cut from generic jerseys
- not worn, not used, not associated with anything meaningful
Just a piece of cloth glued into a card.
What’s the point?
To me, it adds no real value. It’s just… there.
The Practical Problem No One Talks About
Another issue I personally struggle with is storage and display.
Patch cards are thicker, which means:
- they don’t fit next to the rest of my collection
- they’re stored separately from my main PC
- they’re harder to appreciate and show
If someone comes to my house and wants to see my collection, patch cards are usually out of sight, out of mind.
That alone makes me enjoy them less.
Slowly Phasing Them Out
Because of all this, I’ve slowly been phasing patch cards out of my collection.
Not because they’re bad. Not because others shouldn’t collect them.
Simply because, for me, they no longer do what they once did.
Over to You
That’s my take.
What do you think?
- Do you collect patch cards?
- Do you still enjoy them?
- Or do you feel the same way I do?
Let me know – I’m genuinely curious.
OHobby out. 🎤
