The campaign was notable for its intense knockout rounds and the fact that Valencia reached a second consecutive final, only to fall short again! Bayern’s path to the title included dramatic wins over Manchester United and Real Madrid. In the 2000–01 UCL season, Ballack was Leverkusen’s key plahyer. It was a competition to forget for Bayer 04, coming third in the group and dropping to the Europa League. They were subsequently eliminated by AEK Athens. However, Ballack was a positive on a disappointing campaign.
Ballack went on to have a huge career, winning an unlikely Bundesliga title with Kaiserslautern, 3 Bundesliga’s with Bayern and an EPL title with Chelsea. He was capped 98 times for Germany with 42 goals! Thats nearly a goal every 2 games from midfield!

Ruud van Nistelrooy was a prolific striker known for his clinical finishing, sharp movement in the box, and instinctive goal scoring ability. He thrived on timing and positioning rather than flair, often scoring from close range with either foot or his head. Van Nistelrooy was not particularly flashy, but his consistency, composure under pressure, and deadly accuracy made him one of the most effective forwards of his era!
In truth, this was a season to forget for van Nistelrooy as he missed most of it with ruptured anterior cruciate knee ligaments. Sir Alex Ferguson would go on to sign him the next season anyway and Ruud had an epic career with United.
Ruud scored 150 goals in 219 games for United, winning a Premier League, an FA Cup and a League Cup before signing for Real Madrid. He won 2 La Liga titles with Madrid and had previously won 2 titles with PSV.
Not a huge sticker for the season he had, rather, a sticker that represents one of his first stickers!
6 – Mehmet Scholl – #221 – Rookie Sticker from Panini German Bundesliga 1991/92

Mehmet Scholl was a gifted attacking midfielder known for his creativity, dribbling, and technique. Small in stature but highly intelligent on the ball, Scholl excelled at unlocking defences with clever passes, quick turns, and an excellent sense of timing. He was involved throughout the tournament, contributing both creatively and with 5 goals, including important performances in the knockout rounds. His technical skill and experience were key to Bayern’s midfield balance, complementing more physical teammates and helping guide the team to European glory.
Scholl won 8 Bundesliga titles for Bayern with a whopping 469 appearances. This sticker marks the season he got his highest goal tally (16), a Bundesliga title, and a UCL season. Not bad!
5 – Giovane Elber – #223 – Rookie Sticker from Panini German Bundesliga 1994/95

Giovane Elber was a striker known for his flair, sharp finishing, and intelligent movement. Playing primarily as a striker, he combined technical skill with physical strength, often scoring with both feet and demonstrating great composure in front of goal. Elber was especially effective in linking up with midfielders, using his pace and timing to break defensive lines and find space inside the box. Though not as globally renowned as some of his contemporaries, he was consistently reliable and dangerous in front of goal!
In the 2000–01 UCL season, Elber was a crucial part of Bayern Munich’s attack during their title winning campaign. He scored important goals throughout the tournament including a goal against United in the quarter finals and scoring in both legs against Madrid in the semis! He formed a strong partnership with the likes of Mehmet Scholl and Stefan Effenberg. His 6 goals helped Bayern lift the Champions League trophy that season, and his blend of skill and efficiency made him one of the key figures in their European triumph.

4 – Luis Figo – #16 – Rookie Sticker from Panini Futebol 1992-1993

Luís Figo was a world class winger known for his elegant dribbling, precise crossing, and ability to beat defenders with ease. Technically gifted and tactically intelligent, Figo could operate on either flank, using his quick feet, close control, and vision to create scoring chances. He combined flair with consistency, and while not a prolific goal scorer, he was a master at providing assists and dictating attacking play from wide positions.
In the 2000–01 UCL, Figo was in his first year at Real Madrid after maybe the most controversial transfer in history from Barcelona. He played an important role in Real Madrid’s run to the semi-finals, contributing with his creativity and scoring 5 goals.
Figo has a very impressive CV having played for Sporting, Barca, Madrid and Inter! On top of that, he was a serial winner, with titles with ever club he played for! Figo was the king of Portugal before CR7 made his name. I think this sticker is worth collecting for the season that marked his controversial transfer from Barca!
3 – Iker Casillas Rookie Sticker – #2

Iker Casillas was a legendary Spanish goalkeeper known for his incredible reflexes, composure under pressure, and shot-stopping ability. Despite not being the tallest keeper, Casillas excelled in 1v1 situations and had a remarkable knack for pulling off acrobatic saves. His positioning, agility, and calmness made him a reliable last line of defence, and he quickly earned a reputation for performing in big moments.
In the 2000–01 UCL, Casillas was still a teenager but had already established himself as Real Madrid’s first-choice goalkeeper. Building on his breakout role in the 1999–2000 season, when he became the youngest ever goalkeeper to play in and win a Champions League final, Casillas continued to show maturity beyond his years. During the 2000–01 campaign, he helped Madrid reach the semi-finals, delivering key performances and cementing his status as one of Europe’s most promising young keepers!

Though relatively small in stature, he made up for it with quick acceleration, sharp tackling, and intelligent positioning. Cole was also comfortable going forward, often overlapping and delivering accurate crosses, making him a modern full-back who contributed at both ends of the pitch. His stamina and work rate were among his standout attributes, and coupled with his world class defending, he was an incredible left back
In the 2000–01 UEFA Champions League season, Ashley Cole was beginning to establish himself in Arsenal’s first team. It was his breakout year, during which he began to earn more consistent starts after he displaced Sylvinho. Although still young and developing, Cole was a regular in Champions League matches, gaining valuable experience at the top level and showing glimpses of the player who would go on to become.
Cole is hated among Arsenal fans for moving to Chelsea in 2006, but his quality is undeniable. For both teams, he won a total of 3 Premier League titles, 7 FA Cups, a UCL and a Europa League! For me this is a massive rookie sticker, and in my opinion, Cole is the best leftback of the modern era! Maybe ever!
1 – Carles Puyol Rookie Sticker – #289

Carles Puyol is the best rookie sticker in the Panini UEFA Champions League 2000-2001 collection.
Carles Puyol was a legendary Spanish defender best known for his leadership, commitment, and warrior-like mentality. Primarily a centre back, he could also play as a right-back early in his career. Puyol wasn’t the tallest or most elegant player, but he made up for it with tenacity, sharp anticipation, and outstanding tackling. His relentless work ethic, bravery in challenges, and vocal presence made him the emotional leader of both Barcelona and the Spanish national team for over a decade!
In the 2000–01 UEFA Champions League season, Puyol was emerging as a key player for Barcelona. Though Barcelona were eliminated in the group stage’s second phase, Puyol’s performances showed maturity and consistency, laying the groundwork for his future role as the heart of Barcelona’s defence for years to come.
Puyol is another 1-club legend, playing 15 seasons with Barca! He was their charismatic leader and led Barca through a historic period of dominance! He won 6 La Liga titles and 3 UCL titles. He was also the captain of Spain when they won 2 Euros and a World Cup! A legendary player and a legendary rookie sticker!
Final Word
What an incredible set this one was with some serious legends! Plenty of iconic stickers were left out but I don’t think there can be much argument over the top 3! Well, maybe on the position of them, but I went with Puyol number 1 because he was a 1-club legend. Cole second because he is the best left back I have ever seen. Casillas third because the tail end of his career wasn’t as successful as his earlier years.
I hope you enjoyed reading!
Thanks!
