For the purpose of this article, I’m only counting the “official sets” not the ones released online on a weekly basis by Topps.
As you might know, I’m an avid collector/investor on the Portuguese league market. I try to have every single product available for my buyers here in Portugal and, of course, I’ve been waiting for Gyokeres to have a card in Topps Flagship… and he didn’t. I was waiting for him in Topps Finest… and he, once again, was not featured on the product.
I was in shock – you are telling me that the one of the best scorers in Europe, one of hottest rookies is not featured on Topps’ biggest set? He’s not worth it? I remember that Enzo Fernandez, another hot prospect – got autos in the Flagship set, still in a Benfica jersey.
Topps Football is a game where you can play with your cards. You set up a deck and you play against anyone in the world. The cool feature about it’s that, if you own a card in your deck, you can print it and have a physical copy of it. It’s great! You can also open packs on the app – and recently Topps featured numbered cards. At the moment, there is the Euro theme, where you can pack Euro 2024 cards.
But the other day, it dawned on me – he’s been heavily featured on Topps Football. Gyokeres Topps Football cards have been around everywhere and you can pretty much get them on eBay quite easily – so my theory is that Topps is marketing their app by not releasing a Gyokeres card in the set. Think about it for a second, what better way to promote the app by having one of the top rookies only being featured in the app? Genius move by Topps.
I’m a bit disappointed with this though. As a Portuguese league fan I always love to have portuguese cards on sets, but with this being it is, they won’t feature them. My guess is that they might feature Sporting on the Merlin Chrome set, and have him as a chase card. Only time will tell.
Panini already jumped Topps by having him feature on Panini Donruss FIFA.
That’s it – ohobby out!
