The 2013/14 Ligue 1 season saw fierce competition at the top of the table, with Paris Saint-Germain ultimately clinching their second consecutive league title. Led by the prolific Zlatan Ibrahimovic, PSG dominated the campaign with a goal difference of +61! Monaco emerged as the main challengers to PSG, finishing in second place with a squad bolstered by significant investment from their new owners. Despite their strong performances, they fell short by 9 points.
We are entering the era of PSG and oil money in the French Ligure 1. Quite literally buying there way to the top, let’s see what new players are on the scene and what stickers are worthwhile.
Let’s get into the top 10!
The Panini FOOT 2013-2014 Complete Album
10 – Neal Maupay Rookie Sticker – #310
During his time in Ligue 1 in the 2013/14 season, Maupay showcased his potential as a dynamic young forward. He was part of a poor Nice squad that only just avoided relegation. Incredibly, Mapupay was only 17 and he played 16 times scoring 2. Maupay’s playing style was involved good technique, movement and a high work rate.
Now in England (2024), Maupay is famous for his antics on the pitch. In English, he his considered a “wind up merchant”, where it basically means someone who is extremely annoying for opposition players and fans.
He has never been a prolific goal scorer, but I think this is a nice rookie sticker considering he is often in the headlines – and often not for a good reason!
9 – Remy Cabella – #263 & #264(Insert) – Rookie Sticker from Panini FOOT 2012/13
In the 2013/14 Ligue 1 season, Cabella enjoyed a breakout campaign with Montpellier. He was a pivotal figure in the team’s midfield, contributing both goals (14) and assists (6) while showcasing his flair and technical prowess. Cabella had the ability to create a moment of magic out of nowhere, making him a very dangerous player.
Cabella’s playing style is shaped around his agility, close control, and ability to unlock opposition defences with his incisive passes and dribbles. Furthermore, Cabella is known for his versatility, capable of operating as an attacking midfielder, winger, or even in a deeper playmaking role.
Following this impressive season, he signed for Newcastle United. In truth, his career never really took off after the move, having spells at Marseille, Saint Etienne and Krasnodar. Currently at Lille, he is a solid first team player. I am by no means saying he has had a bad career, but relative to what was expected of him after this season, in what is his second year sticker, he has probably underachieved.
8 – Jerome Roussillon Rookie Sticker – #419
Roussillon is a lighting quick left back who relys on his pace, physicality, and ability to contribute both defensively and offensively. Defensively, he is adept at making timely tackles, interceptions, and clearances, often nullifying the threat posed by opposing wingers.
Offensively, Roussillon is known for his overlapping runs, crossing ability, and willingness to join the attack. He possesses good dribbling skills for a full-back and can deliver dangerous crosses into the box, creating scoring opportunities for his teammates. His energy and stamina enable him to maraud up and down the left flank throughout the match, providing width and support to the team’s attacking play.
He only just broke into the Sochaux team in 2013/14 and didn’t see much game time. It wouldn’t take long for him to impress and earn a move to Montpellier. He spent 3 years there before moving on to the Bundesliga to play for VFL Wolfsburg. In 2023, he signed for Union Berlin, where he still plays today.
Anyone who played FIFA will know this guy. Often a choice for many players on Ultimate Team due to his place. Maybe for that reason alone this is an interesting rookie sticker.
7 – Marco Verratti – #331 – Rookie Sticker from Panini Calciatori 2010/11
In the 2013/14 Ligue 1 season, Verratti continued to showcase his immense talent and potential while playing for PSG. He played a crucial role in the team’s midfield, dictating the tempo of matches with his precise passing and astute positional play. Despite his relatively young age at the time, Verratti displayed maturity beyond his years, earning the Young Player of the year award.
Verratti has exceptional technical ability, close ball control, and composure under pressure. He possesses excellent passing range, capable of delivering accurate short and long-range passes to initiate attacks and unlock opposing defences. Furthermore, Verratti is known for his tenacity and defensive work rate, often winning back possession for his team with well-timed tackles and interceptions. Despite his relatively small stature, he is a very tenacious competitor, often getting booked for excessive aggression.
He has gone on to have an epic career with PSG. This his second year at PSG is a very nice sticker and one that represents a league title.
6 – James Rodriguez – #235 – Rookie Sticker from Panini Futebol 2010/11
In the 2013/14 Ligue 1 season, Rodriguez had a standout campaign while playing for AS Monaco. He emerged as one of the league’s brightest talents, showcasing his ability to control matches with his exquisite passing, dribbling, and eye for goal. Rodriguez’s performances that season propelled Monaco to a second place finish in Ligue 1, behind only PSG. James led the leagues assist table for the season with 12.
Rodriguez’s playing style is characterised by his elegance on the ball, intelligent movement, and deadly left foot. He is known for his precise passing, often delivering defence splitting through balls. One of Rodriguez’s standout qualities is his proficiency in set-pieces, particularly his ability to score from free-kicks and provide pinpoint deliveries from corners and free-kicks. Furthermore, his left foot in open play was a wand, capable of scoring from anywhere in various different ways.
The following season, he was signed by Real Madrid in a mega money move. After a few good years in Madrid, his performances started to drop and never has been quite the same player. I think this sticker coincides with the peak of James Rodriguez. Remember, it was the 2014 World Cup where everyone learned who this guy truely was!
5 – Vincent Aboubakar – #163 – Rookie Sticker from Panini FOOT 2012/13
During the 2013/14 Ligue 1 season, Aboubakar showcased his goal-scoring prowess while playing for Lorient. He emerged as one of the top strikers in the league, Scoing 16 times and assisting 6! He had just signed from Valenciennes and had a big break out season. The following season he was signed by FC Porto.
Aboubakar’s playing style is modelled off his strength, speed, and agility, making him a potent threat in the attacking third. He is known for his ability to hold up play, bring teammates into the game, and create scoring opportunities with his intelligent movement off the ball. Furthermore, Aboubakar is a lethal finisher inside the box, capable of scoring with both feet and his head. He has fantastic technical ability and has the flair and confidence to pull of miraculous things with his feet!
He had a solid career at Porto, but is probably most loved in Turkey for his time at Besiktas. He is a bit of a cult hero because of all the incredible goals he scored. This his second year sticker is a nice one considering the season he had. It should also be noted he is caped (at the time of writing) 100 times for Cameroon, scoring 37 times.
4 – Martin Braithwaite Rookie Sticker – #454
During the 2013/14 Ligue 1 season, Braithwaite signed for Toulouse. He emerged as one of the team’s key attacking players, contributing both goals and assists with his performances. Braithwaite’s playing style is relies on his agility, speed, and willingness to run at defenders. He possesses excellent dribbling skills, allowing him to beat opponents in one-on-one situations and create space for himself and his teammates in the final third.
Additionally, Braithwaite is known for his versatility, capable of playing in various attacking positions, including as a central striker, winger, or attacking midfielder. His adaptability makes him a valuable asset to his team, providing tactical flexibility for his managers.
He spent 4 solid seasons at Toulouse, being a regular scorer, before moving the Middlesbrough. He then has spells in Spain and France before shocking the world signing for FC Barcelona! It’s probably fair to say he wasn’t Barcelona material, only scoring 10 in 58, but to get there is an achievement in itself!
He may not be a prolific scorer, but he is always a reliable player that put in a shift. A nice rookie sticker.
3 – Yannick Carrasco Rookie Sticker – #230
In the 2013/14 Ligue 1 season, Carrasco emerged as a promising talent while playing for AS Monaco. He showcased his potential as a dynamic winger, catching the eye with his explosive speed and skillful dribbling. Carrasco’s performances contributed to Monaco’s successful campaign, as they finished runners-up in the league that season.
Carrasco is know directness and willingness to take on defenders. He possesses excellent close control and acceleration, allowing him to beat opponents in one-on-one situations and often leaving defenders embarrassed! He has supreme confidence to completely demoralise opposition defenders.
Carrasco is mostly known for his time art Atletico Madrid. Under Diego Simeone he has thrived, playing over 200 games and winning a historic La Liga title! Unfortunately, only at the age of 30, he has taken to money to play in the Saudi league (Who can blame him). Hopefully he comes back to a top league to finish off his good career.
This is an underrated rookie sticker. Over 70 caps for Belgium in their golden generation era is a fantastic achievement. Consider some of the wingers Belgium have had over the years.
2 – Divock Origi Rookie Sticker – #140
In the 2013/14 Ligue 1 season, Origi burst onto the scene while playing for Lille. Despite his young age, he made a significant impact, showcasing his raw talent and potential as a dynamic forward. Origi’s performances helped Lille secure a third-place finish in the league that season.
Origi’s playing style is characterised by his physicality and ability to hold up the ball, allowing him to bring teammates into play and create scoring opportunities. He possesses impressive pace and acceleration, enabling him to make penetrating runs behind the opposition defence. Additionally, Origi is known for his aerial prowess, often winning aerial duels and scoring headers inside the box.
He has never been a prolific goal scorer but he has the knack for scoring important goals. Liverpool fans know this better than most as he is a cult hero there! It is not often a striker at a huge club like Liverpool is loved universally despite only scoring 45 goals in 175 appearances. It is the gravity of the goals he scored that make him a legend. Off the top of my head, a late winner against rivals Everton and scoring a brace in the historic comeback against FC Barcelona!
In truth, as a striker, Origi isn’t that amazing of a player. Nonetheless, this rookie sticker is a huge one considering the love Liverpool have for him. He spent 7 seasons there winning the Premier League and a Champions League title.
1 – Zlatan Ibrahimovic – 302 – Rookie Sticker from Panini Fotboll Allsvenskan 2000
During the 2013/14 Ligue 1 season, Ibrahimovic continued to assert his dominance as one of the most prolific strikers in the world. He played a pivotal role in PSG’s success, helping the club secure their second consecutive league title. Ibrahimovic’s performances were nothing short of spectacular, as he won the golden boot with 26 league goals and assisted 11 times! Furthermore, he won the player of the year (I mean who wouldn’t with those stats).
Most readers know what Zlatan is all about but encase you don’t I will give a breif overview. His playing style is characterised by his imposing physical presence, exceptional ball control, and clinical finishing. Standing at 195 cm’s, he possesses remarkable strength and agility for a player of his stature, allowing him to outmuscle defenders and create space for himself and his teammates.
One of Ibrahimovic’s most notable attributes is his technical proficiency, particularly his ability to execute spectacular goals with both feet and his head. He is renowned for his acrobatic volleys, powerful strikes from distance, and precise headers, often leaving spectators and opponents in awe.
His highlights reel must be hours long! He takes the number one spot for his spectacular individual season!
The Other Remy Cabella Rookie Sticker
Summary
I had this set planned to review, but it was fast tracked as I got a request from a friend off instagram (panini.collections). Overall, it was a fun set to review with many exciting players. As a follower of the Turkish Süper Lig, I was delighted to see Aboubakar having a big season early in his career – he is one of my favourite ballers!
There were some nice rookies but nothing that’s going to break the bank. Divock is a really interesting one as I can imagine all Liverpool collectors are going to want that one! Zlatan’s season was just too strong to not take the number one spot. As at the time of writing, Zlatan is probably the most featured player in the articles I have written thus far; what a player!
